Alcohol and Your Career

Abusing alcohol can cause severe health issues, with some being more serious than the individual had imagined. This often manifested as liver disease, a life-threatening illness. In addition, the abuse of alcohol can cause devastating issues in one's household. Children of alcoholics often grown up witnessing spousal abuse (domestic violence), and often end up being alcoholics themselves.

Besides the health and domestic risks of alcohol abuse, there is also the issue of alcohol and your career. Besides families being destroyed, careers can be significantly damaged as well. The negative effects of drugs and alcohol often cause a downward spiral of the individual's career. The alcoholic displays a series of negative behavior, which sometimes results in him losing his occupation.

If an individual works while under the influence of alcohol more often than not he undergoes mental and physical changes. These changes may cause him to make decisions or do things that he normally wouldn't do. He becomes more prone to accidents in the workplace, and because alcoholism changes how he thinks, it becomes very hard for him to focus on the intricacies of his job. Often, the mind is incapable of making proper judgments and the individual loses his sense of perception.

The entire work organization suffers when alcohol becomes an issue in the workplace. An alcoholic may call in sick regularly or may be late all the time, and he always has an excuse as to why he couldn't make it in on time or at all. The fact is, when employees don't show up for work, the company has to pay for the sick days (if they are a part of the company's policy) plus pay overtime to substitute employees. The effects of alcohol and your career are negative because poor performance results in work not getting done timely and efficiently. When the job is not properly performed, it has to be redone. This is valuable time and energy being wasted. Time is money for the employer. When an intoxicated worker sustains an injury as a result, it can cost the company a lot of money in employee's compensation; in addition, the employer may have to pay for replacement employees.

All these factors result in higher costs and more money being spent on training new personnel. Employees who perform poorly will receive a poor evaluation performance, thus hindering his chances for professional and personal growth with the company. The physical effects of alcohol on your career often manifest as withdrawals, dizziness, nausea, severe headaches and elevated blood pressure. These symptoms may occur in the workplace, resulting in adverse effects on the individual's productivity.

It is obvious that alcohol and your career are not a wise combination, due to its negative impacts. Alcohol can cause an employee to behave unruly, violent and sometimes deceitful. Losing one's job over alcohol abuse is simply not worth it, especially when jobs are not easy to find.
