Outpatient treatment programs are suitable when the individual has already rid themself of the drugs in his system (detoxification). These drugs help to prevent withdrawal symptoms and alleviate cravings for the drug. If an addict expects to undergo a successful outpatient treatment program they must already have some degree of distance from drug or alcohol addiction. They must be stable and be capable of functioning in an uncontrolled atmosphere such as when they are not at the drug or alcohol treatment center.
